Finances

It is Friday morning at 8:30 and the only reason I am awake is that the handy man is coming to put a lightbulb in our bathroom (we can’t fix it ourself because it is those weird ones that are set into the ceiling). Rob and I stayed up last night discussing finances (yes, finances).

In the UK the most common way to be paid is monthly. I pretty much think this is absurd. This means that even though I start work next week I don’t get paid until October 27th. October 27th!! That is more than six weeks away. This also means that for next month our outgoing is £200 greater than our incoming. Really not good. In order to sort this out we had to make two Excel spread sheets and use an actual proper calculator, not just the one on our phone.

Well we are going to survive thanks to some well timed intervention from parents, but for this next six weeks our only from of entertainment must be free (or under £5). Ugh.

Also, last week I had a few very involved conversations about mortgage rates, life insurance, and credit history. I am old.

On the brighterside, I had training yesterday. I think I am really going to like my job. I work four shifts starting next week. Tomorrow Rob and I are going to visit all of my campuses (there are four). This way if people ask me directions while I am at work I might actually be able to tell them. Another benefit of this is that I get to see our pretty campuses. At first I didn’t think they were so great (obviously not as great as Whitworth), but the more I see of them the more I like them. One of them has a completely ivy covered old brick building. Another one has this really awesome greco-roman fountain right in the middle. And all of the campuses are right on the River Thames.

Anyway, that is life. It is now 9:20 and the handy man was supposed to be here 20 minutes ago. Ugh.
